Wenn man an Sardinien denkt, dann verbindet man meist Luxus, Celebrities und teuren Urlaub damit. Die Insel ist aber nicht nur bei den „Reichen“ beliebt. Sardinien ist gerade unter Kitern, Windsurfern und Wellenreitern ein Geheimtipp. Rund um die Insel gibt es jede Menge Spots die für unterschiedliche Winde und Bedingungen geeignet sind.
Die Insel ist 200 km vorm Festland von Italien gelagert. Mit fast 2000 km Küstenlinie, Sandstränden, traumhaften Buchten und den Bergen im Inneren der Insel ist es eine perfekte Urlaubsinsel für Wassersport, Aktiv- oder Strandurlaub. Wasserqualität und -temperatur sind unübertrefflich. Ich glaube, es gibt kein klareres und sanfteres Wasser als in Sardinien.
Ich war Mitte Juni an einem der größten, schönsten und chilligsten Kite- und Windsurf Spots Sardinien in Porto Pollo unterwegs. Kiteschulen, Windsurfschulen, Surfbar und Essensbuden sind hübsch entlang einer Landzunge Richtung der kleinen Halbinsel La Maddalena drapiert - das richtige Surferfeeling inklusive.
Kiter und Windsurfer kommen sich nicht in die Quere - höchstens in Rupi’s Beachbar..;-). Die Bereiche sind abgetrennt voneinander. Windsurfer rechts, Kiter links.
Der Bereich für die Kiter ist speziell gekennzeichnet und darf/sollte zwischen 15.Juni und 15.September nicht verlassen werden, um die Badegäste nicht zu gefährden. Wenn man seinen Kite aber etwas ausserhalb der Zone aufbaut, sagt niemand was. Zumindest nicht in der Vorsaison, wo die Strände noch leer sind.
Ab Mai kann man mit zuverlässigem Wind über 12 Knoten rechnen. Juli und August ist für Kiter „Hauptsaison“ und man kann fast täglich mit gutem Sideshore rechnen. Vormittags ist der Wind meist etwas „ruppig“. Wer Geduld hat, wird nachmittags bis spät abends mit gleichmäßigem herrlichen Wind belohnt.
Wer nach einem Kitetag noch Kraft, Lust und Laune hat, kann bei einem leckeren Cocktail und chilligem DJ Sound in Rupis Beachbar den Abend gemütlich ausklingen lassen. „Sehr empfehlenswert“.
Für wen ist der Spot geeignet: Für mich als blutiger Anfänger eher schwierig, da es keinen Stehbereich gibt. Für Aufsteiger und Fortgeschrittene perfekt.
Wo schläft man?
Da die Hauptsaison in Italien erst im August anfängt bekommt man problemlos auch kurzfristig eine Unterkunft im Juni.
Im Blue Corner direkt in Porto Pollo hab ich mir eine Ferienwohnung gemietet. Perfekter Ausgangspunkt zum Kiten, aber auch Sightseeing, Rennradeln oder Moutainbiken. Aber auch im Hinterland gibt es jede Menge B&B oder auch Agritourismo, wenn man es einfach und unkompliziert mag. Ab 35 € pro Nacht für 2 Personen ohne Frühstück bist Du dabei. Nach oben ist natürlich alles offen.
Wie kommt man am besten hin?
Ab Stuttgart oder Berlin fliegen verschiedenen Billigflug Airlines den Flughafen Olbia für kleines Geld an. Mit Airberlin hab ich ab Stuttgart 110€ für Hin- und Rückflug bezahlt.
In Olbia angekommen gehts dann mit dem Mietwagen weiter, den man sich idealerweise schon vorab online bucht. Wenn man etwas von der Landschaft sehen möchte fährt man entlang der Costa Smeralda Richtung Arzachena und dann nach Porto Pollo. Auf direktem Weg geht es etwas kurviger über die Berge. Also wer einen empfindlichen Magen hat, der sollte die landschaftlich reizvollere Route entlang der Costa Smeralda wählen..:-)..so wie ich. Nach nicht ganz einer Stunde Fahrt ist man schon am Ziel seiner Träume..;-)..“Porto Pollo“.
Man kommt direkt zu einem großen Parkareal für den Windsurf-Bereich. Wer etwas näher an den Kitesurf Spot fahren möchte, der biegt vor den Parkplätzen links ab und kommt zu einem versteckten Parkplatz, der natürlich wie überall Geld kostet - 7,50€ am Tag.
Wer sich das sparen möchte, parkt ausserhalb am Straßenrand und muss einen 10 minütigen Fußmarsch in Kauf nehmen. Jeder wie er mag.
Was kann man noch machen?
Ein Besuch in Palau ist natürlich Pflicht. Frische Fritta Mista im ersten Fischladen im Ort ist für Feinschmecker ein Muss. Genauso ist die eine oder andere Kugel Eis in meinen Magen gewandert. In Palau ist täglich in der Woche großer Markt am Abend.
Entlang der Costa Smeralda kann man die traumhafte Landschaft genießen oder einen Abstecher zum Shoppen nach Porto Cervo oder Bahia Sardinia machen.
Richtung Norden gibt es viele kleine gemütliche Strände zu entdecken, die alle gut ausgeschildert sind und direkt von der Hauptstraße wegführen.
Wer mit dem Rennrad die Insel erkunden will, kann sich in Palau Räder mieten. Die Autofahrer scheinen hier ziemlich entspannt zu sein. Man sollte nur sehr früh losfahren, um sich nicht in der Mittagshitze schmoren zu lassen.

Gut zu wissen?
Wenn der Wind in Porto Pollo fürs Kisten zu stark ist, gibt es weiter nördlich einen etwas versteckten traumhaften Strand mit Welle, bei dem etwas schwächere Windverhältnisse herrschen - Rena Majore.
Das beste italienische Frühstück bekommt man übrigens in den vielen kleinen Bars am Straßenrand. Ein frisches warmes Brioche mit Creme und nen leckeren Cappuccino. Perfekt.

When you think about Sardinia, then you think about luxury, celebrities and expensive vacation. But the island is no longer preserve of the „rich". Sardinia is a insider tip below kitesurfers, windsurfers and surfers. Around the island there are plenty of spots that are suitable for different winds and conditions.
The island is located 200 km from the mainland of Italy. With almost 2,000 km of coastline, sandy beaches, beautiful bays and the mountains in the interior of the island it is a perfect holiday island for water sports, active or beach holiday. Water quality and temperature are incredible. I think there is no clearer and softer water than in Sardinia.
In mid of June I was at one of the largest, most beautiful and coolest kite- and windsurf spots in Sardinia - Porto Pollo in the North of the island. Kite schools, windsurfing schools, surfbars and food booths are nicely drapped along a narrow beach towards the small peninsula La Maddalena - the surfer feeling included.
Kiters and windsurfers do not getting in the way of each other - maybe only in Rupi's Beach bar .. ;-). The areas are separated from each other. Windsurfer on the right beach, kite surfers on the left.
The zone for the kitesurfers is specifically marked and may / should not be left in order not to endanger bathers between June 15 and September 15. But if you set up and launch your kite outside this zone, it is not a problem. At least not in the preseason, where the beaches are still empty.
From May, you can expect reliable wind over 12 knots. July and August is "high season" and you can expect almost daily good sideshore. In the morning the wind is usually a bit "rough". If you have enough patience you are rewarded in the afternoon until late at night with even magnificent wind.
Those who have still power after a long day on the water, can enjoy the evening with a delicious cocktail and food and good sound in Rupis beach bar. "Highly recommended".
For whom the spot is suitable: For me as a beginner rather difficult, as there is no flat water area. It is perfect for intermediates and advanced.
Where to sleep:
As the high season begins in August in Italy it is easy to get a room short term.
In Blue Corner directly in Porto Pollo I rented an apartment. Perfect base for kiting, but also sightseeing, cycling or mountain biking. But even in the back country there are plenty of B & B or agritourism, if you like it simple. Prices are from 35 € per night for 2 persons without breakfast until open end..:-).
How to get there:
There are several low cost airlines in Germany which fly to Olbia. With Airberlin I paid € 110 for a return flight from Stuttgart.
Once in Olbia, I picked up my rental car, which I booked online in advance. There are several providers next to the airport. If you want to see something of the landscape you can drive along the Costa Smeralda to the direction of Arzachena and then to Porto Pollo. The direct route takes you over the mountains. Those who have a sensitive stomach should choose the more scenic route along the Costa Smeralda…;-)..After not quite a hour's drive you are already at your dream destination .. ;-) .. "Porto Pollo".
The road takes you directly to a large park area. Who wants to drive a bit closer to the kitesurf spot you turn a left before the main parking areas and you come to a hidden parking space. Parking costs are € 7.50 per day.
If you want to save money, you can park on the roadside. It takes you a 10 minute walk to the beach.
What else to do:
A visit to Palau and fresh "Fritta Mista" in the first fishmonger in Palau is a must for gourmets. Also you can visit the daily market next to the harbour every evening.
Along the Costa Smeralda you can enjoy the beautiful scenery or do shopping in Porto Cervo or Baia Sardinia.
Northbound you can discover many small cozy beaches, which are all well marked and lead away directly from the main road.
Those wishing to explore the island by roadbike or mountain bike you can hire bikes in Palau. The car drivers seem to be quite relaxed here.. ;-)
Good to know:
When the wind in Porto Pollo is too strong for kitesurfing , there is a hidden lovely beach with waves. There you find weaker wind conditions - Rena Majore.
Best Italian breakfast you get in the small bars. Just a brioche and a cappuchino…:-). Perfect.
